Wayang Kulit, Shadow Puppet Theatre is an Indonesian cultural expression of shadow puppetry, The puppets are made of buffalo hide and intricately designed, down to the most minute detail of costume and color, to help the audience distinguish between the different characters.
The Dalang (puppet master) brings to life the stories in the Hindu epics incuding kings, princesses, ogres, and knights. Many of the stories originate from episodes of the Hindu epics Ramayana and Mahabharata.

Shadow theaters are orchestrated by the Dalang who manipulates the puppets and creates the speech, accents and sounds according to age and gender of the character. The Dalang is also a composer, improviser, producer, orator, singer, choirmaster, dance master and stage manager.
The Shadow theater performance is accompanied by the unique sounds of the Javanese gamelan orchestra. The gamelan is a traditional percussion ensemble consisting of many bronze gongs and metal xylophones of varied size and tones and may include drums, zither, and flute.
